A Month-by-Month Planting Calendar for Saratoga Springs and Upstate New York Gardeners.

Seed starting

Spring is almost here — which means it's officially time for seed starting indoors in New York State! If you're planning your spring garden in Saratoga Springs or the greater Upstate New York region, starting seeds indoors now will give your vegetables, herbs, and flowers a strong, healthy head start before planting outdoors.

Knowing the right timing is key for successful seed starting in New York. Our region typically falls within USDA Zones 4-5, with an average last frost date in mid-May. To help you plan accurately, we recommend the Saratoga Springs planting calendar from The Old Farmer's Almanac — it's the most reliable resource for our specific frost dates.

Saratoga Springs, New York Seed Starting Calendar

In our region, the average last frost falls around May 10–15. That date is your anchor for everything. Here's when to start the most common vegetables and flowers indoors:

February (10–12 weeks before last frost)

  • Onions and leeks

  • Celery and celeriac

  • Slow-growing annual flowers like pansies and snapdragons

March (8–10 weeks before last frost)

  • Tomatoes — start around March 1–15 for strong transplants by mid-May

  • Peppers and eggplant — these need the longest head start

  • Petunias and other slow annual flowers

Early April (4–6 weeks before last frost)

  • Cucumbers and summer squash

  • Melons

  • Basil and most herbs

  • Fast-growing annuals like marigolds and zinnias

Direct sow outdoors (after May 15)

  • Beans, peas, and corn — direct sow only, don't transplant

  • Sunflowers

  • Carrots, beets, and radishes

A few tips for upstate New York specifically:

Our springs can be unpredictable — a warm April can be followed by a hard frost in the first week of May. Don't rush transplants outdoors before the 15th and always harden seedlings off for 7–10 days before planting. Set them outside in a sheltered spot for a few hours a day, increasing exposure gradually.

If you're starting tomatoes, aim for 6–8 weeks indoors — no more. Overgrown, leggy transplants struggle more than compact ones. A 6-inch tomato seedling with a thick stem will outperform a 12-inch lanky one every time. One more thing worth knowing: Saratoga Springs sits in a frost pocket — cold air settles in low-lying areas and can linger longer than the calendar suggests. If your garden is in a low spot, add a week of buffer to all your transplant dates.
